I just began cutting out tiny fragments, by using the generate silence feature on Audacity. I soon found myself becoming extremely conscious of the size of these fragments (measured in samples because they were shorter than 1 second) and kept trying to generate ever smaller fragments. I also used the envelope filter to adjust volume levels.
